Army Radio News - 20 Dec 2012

The number of British troops in Afghanistan will halve by Christmas next year.
The Prime Minister made the announcement yesterday in Parliament but some will stay in Helmand after 2014.

Soldiers from B Company 1 Scots are back home.
Troops landed back in Scotland late on Wednesday evening December 19 and were welcomed back from Afghanistan by cheering family, friends and comrades.

The Prime Minister has announced a reduction in UK troop numbers in Afghanistan by the end of 2013.
In Parliament, David Cameron said UK forces would shift from mentoring Afghan troops at battalion level to brigade level next year. This reflects the progress made in Helmand and the increasing ability and confidence of the Afghan National Security Forces.

A female officer has become just the fourth woman in history to win Sandhurst's prestigious Sword of Honour.
The accolade from the Royal Military Academy was awarded to Officer Cadet Sarah Hunter-Choat. The highly coveted award is presented to the best overall Officer Cadet out of 200 in the senior term and is personally chosen by the Academy's Commandant, Major General Timothy Evans.

The Defence Secretary has written a Christmas message to all service and civilian personnel.
Philip Hammond speaks of a busy and challenging year and thanks everyone for their hardwork over the past 12 months. He says " I am proud to lead such a capable team of men and women"

The MOD is planning to auction some of its radio spectrum.
In the first of its kind by a Government department the sale aims to give private operators the chance to buy more spectrum to support the introduction of  fourth-generation mobile services. The Ministry Of Defence aims to auction around 200 megahertz of its spectrum usage rights.

Britain's favourite truckers have released a single to raise money for Help For Heroes.
The parody of The Twelve Days of Christmas has been recorded by big hearted drivers who work for Eddie Stobart.

A Helpline aims to bring comfort to members of the Armed Forces this Christmas.
FORCESLINE is gearing up for a busy few weeks following another difficult and uncertain year for the military. The service is provided by SSAFA Forces Help and takes over 5000 calls each year.

The Armed Forces Covenant has now been operating for a year and has proved very succesful.
The Rt Hon Mark Francois, Minister of State for Defence, Personnel, Welfare and Veterans say he's pleased with how it's been accepted but acknowledges more work needs to be done to improve the lives of soldiers and their families in the future.

The Minister of State for Defence, Personnel, Welfare and Vetarans, has visited a new MOD housing development in Wiltshire.
Mark Francois MP, toured the 46 million pound state of the art Canadian Estate, built to provide accomodation for soldiers and their families stationed at Tidworth and Bulford Garrison.

Over 400 junior soldiers marched in sub-zero temperatures in harrogate earlier this week.
The passing out parade of seventeen-year-old students took place at the college in Penny Pot Lane. The soldiers are the final winter intake to graduate.

19 Regiment Royal Artillery change from Highland to Scottish Gunners in a ceremony held on Salisbury Plain.
The Wiltshire-based troop have changed their name as they are the only remaining Scottish Artillery Regiment.

Airborne soldiers have thrown the first punches in their assault on the Army Boxing Championships, a competition that they've traditionally dominated.
Three of the six teams competing in this year's contest are from Colchester-based 16 Air Assault Brigade, with 3rd Battalion The Parachute Regiment the defending champions. At the event, held at Colchester Garrison 2 Para scored a resounding 8-1 victory.

Soldiers who fly and maintain the Apache attack helicopter have been honoured following operations in Libya and Afghanistan.
Wattisham-based 4 Regiment Army Air Corps received their medals at the event on Tuesday (11 Dec) recognising their role in the NATO-led Libya operation in summer 2011 and their service in Afghanistan earlier this year.

A Sikh soldier has become the first Guardsman to parade outside Buckingham Palace wearing a turban instead of the famous bearskin.
Jatenderpal Singh Bhullar,25, is the first Guardsman in 180 years of tradition to wear his turban at the famous Palace.

The National Army Museum have uncovered a First World War Christmas card sent 96 years ago.
The card sent to his sweetheart, Ada Manley, was sent by a soldier named Holly Chrismas.

A former member of the Armed Forces has set up a website that aims to assist those making the move from the military to civvy street.
Joboppo.co.uk has been created specifically with members of the forces in mind, who have or are about to leave and enter civilian life again.

The Royal British Legion has said that the UK is doing better at honouring its covenant. The nation's duty of care -with the armed forces.
However it adds that more still needs to be done on housing for the military as well as the treatment of reserves and commonwealth personnel.

Armed Forces personnel are recognised at the fifth annual Sun Military Awards (The Miliies).
Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall were guests of honour at the event billed as "A Night of Heroes".

Former soldiers are to be drafted into schools to pass on military-style values.
The plan is part of a 1.9 million pound government initiative aimed at passing on skills like teamwork and leadership to expelled pupils.

Sir Alex Ferguson has presented soldiers with their Afghanistan medals.
The Manchester United Manager handed out the honours at Chester Racecourse to members of 1st Battalion The Royal Welsh after they had marched through the city centre.

The Prime Minister has handed over nearly a million pounds to wounded troops.
The money comes from a 35 million pound pot of fines, imposed on financial institutions for the Libor rate-fix scandal. Just under a million has just been handed over to Fisher House who will use the cash to build houses for families so they can be close to loved ones in Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

The charity Blind Veterans UK are asking you to do something a little different this year.
The organisation, who used to be known as St. Dunstan's, want you to remember a loved one online via their 'Star Of Remembrance' initiative.

The Army Sports Awards 2012 have taken place.
Many of this years' winners awarded also excelled at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
Rowing and rugby were just 2 of the sports honoured.

Together with their Spanish counterparts they've been training for the threat of future conflicts around the world.

A new force of  "cyber reservists" will be recruited to boost Britain's online defences, due to increasing fears of a crippling attack on national computer systems.
The Ministry Of Defence is set to bring in additional experts to support work protecting the country against the growing threat of cyber attack.

Military equipment worth tens of thousands of pounds have been stolen from Armed Forces establishments over the six months period to September.
The items include components from an SA80 rifle, silverware, radio equipment, ration packs and even a pony. The items were listed in a response to Parliament by Defence Minister Mark Francois MP.

The Ministry Of Defence has held its first innovative 'Science On Show' event in London.
The aim of the initiative was to give small British businesses the chance to pitch their ideas to some of the world's biggest Defence companies.

British Army staff have been given a longer festive holiday this year as a thank you for their hard work.
Personnel will now get 25 days leave over Christmas for the work they did at the 2012 London Olympics and the Queen's Jubilee celebrations. The break will take place between December 14th and January 7th 2013.

Defence Secretary Philip Hammond has been speaking following the release of Sergeant Danny Nightingale.
The SAS soldier, jailed for keeping an Iraqi pistol as a war trophy was released yesterday following a successful appeal against his 18 month jail sentence. Mr Hammond says he wants to look at an amnesty and new guidelines for service personnel following the case.

Serving officer and Olympic gold medalist Captain Heather Stanning has received a musical tribute from Army musicians.
Captain Stanning received a fanfare from the team of the Welsh Guards written to honour her outstanding acheivement at this summer's London Olympic Games when she visited Kneller Hall.

The Christmas post deadline for getting parcels to Armed Forces personnel overseas is getting close.
Monday, December 3rd is the last day for getting mail sent. The British Forces Post Office are urging people to use this weekend to get any last minute packages ready. They're also asking members of the public to avoid sending unsolicited gifts to prevent clogging up the forces postal system.

Members of the Military Stabilisation Support Group have completed a two-week initiative in Kenya to test a new concept in upstream conflict prevention.
Exercise Civil Bridge 12, the MSSG's annual overseas training exercise is aimed to understand the underlying causes of conflict and instability before they result in violence.

The Armed Buns Calendar 2013 hopes to raise more funds for forces charities over the coming weeks. 
It's the third time the calendar has been made by wives, girlfriends and friends of serving soldiers, and to date they've raised over sixteen thousand pounds.

16 Medical Regiment (16 Air Assault Brigade) have been showing off their state of the art equipment to the NHS.
Medics set up the three-part, green tented Airborne Surgical Group (ABSG) at Merville Barracks in Colchester, to show visitors how a small field hospital can be erected in less than an hour.

The Defence Ideas Scheme (GEMS) has now relaunched with a new online system.
This will now make submitting suggestions and tracking progress from evaluation to outcome easier.

Cricket Legend Freddie Flintoff has donated free tickets to servicemen and women for his debut professional boxing match against the American Richard Dawson at the Manchester Arena.
Tickets can be obtained from tickets for troops.org.uk and are available to ALL serving personnel and those discharged since 2001.

Prime Minister David Cameron has said that the UK needs to make a clear effort to help military partners acheive employment wherever they find themselves living.
His comments were made in a letter to the organization Recruit For Spouses after the launch of the 'Military Spouses Business and Employment Charter' recently.

The Afghan National Army has narrowly beaten the British Army in a Twenty 20 cricket match.
The game was held on the helicopter landing site of the Afghan Army's Camp Shorabak. The home side were taking on troops from Catterick's 4 Mech Brigade, known as the Black Rats.

The new Deputy Commander Land Forces, Major General Ranald Munro has been tasked with shaping the future role of the TA.
He's calling on everyone to engage with the FR20 Green Paper so that the future of Army reservists can take shape.

The Military Academy, sandhurst celebrates its 200th Anniversary this year.
The Sovereign's Parade takes place soon with over 200 cadets passing out. Amongst those qualifying will be a number from other nations who send their potential officers to the world renowned establishment.

A giant Christmas card carrying festive wishes to soldiers in Afghanistan is being prepared.
The Mayor of York and the civic party is offering the public the opportunity to show their support of soldiers by writing a message inside it this week.

1 Mercian Regiment are now nearly two months into their deployment in Nad e Ali on Op' Herrick 17.
They've already seen progress being made by their colleagues from the Afghan Security Forces.

The MOD has announced it's investing 46 million pounds in acquiring fifty-one new Foxhound patrol vehicles for soldiers serving on the frontline in Afghanistan.
The news was broken by Defence Minister Philip Dunne MP, during a visit to General Dynamics: Force Protection's spares facility in Telford which supplies components for the Foxhound vehicle.

Tickets For Troops, the organisation that provides free tickets to members of the Armed Forces have passed a major milestone.
They've announced that in the 3 short years they have been operating, they have now handed out over 300,000 tickets for events and more than 115,000 military personnel have registered with them.

1 Lancs soldiers on Op' Herrick 17 based in Lashkar gah have made early progress.
Working alongside and developing the Afghan Security Forces, they've been able to introduce them into villages and integrate them into the local population.

The UK's largest regional brigade have signed up every local community in its area to the new Armed Forces Community Covenant.
15 (North East) Brigade joined Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council and its partners to sign the historic agreement which represents a population of over 7 million.

The Inter-Services Under 23s Rugby Championships are underway and there's another big match on the way.
Young guns from all 3 services are doing battle with each other and aiming to get a place in their senior sides too. The Army are the current champions, they take on the Navy at the Aldershot Military Stadium this Friday evening. Kick-Off is 7.30pm (23/11/12)

The initiative aims to give 1000 military leavers a way back into the workplace with the help of major companies.

Forces children in Scotland have made a film about their lives.
The 26 minute movie called 'Forces Kids-This is my life' captures the emotional highs and lows of youngsters and how they cope with deployment.

This new project aims to help injured and ex-soldiers who have fallen on hard times to adjust back into society and gain valuable work skills.

Soldiers from 2nd Battalion The Royal Tank Regiment have been celebrating.
The tankies have been commemorating the 95th anniversary of the Battle of Cambrai when tanks were deployed for the first time against the might of the German defences in the First World War.

The case of jailed SAS soldier, Sergeant Danny Nightingale is expected to be debated in Parliament.
He was jailed this week for illegally possessing a firearm. He said he didn't know the pistol was in his kit as colleagues had packed it for him prior to his return home from deployment.

The 2012 British Military Tournament is set to be one of the most explosive ever.
The event, which takes place on December 8th and 9th is expected to attract a record audience including the Duke and Duchess Of Cambridge.

An ex-soldier from Blackburn,who lost a service medal 13 years ago has had it returned.
Mick France, a former Lance Corporal with the Queen's Lancashire Regiment, now part of the Duke of Lancaster's was reunited with his honour after it was found on sale in an Afghan marketplace.

The first of 62 Wildcats have been handed over to the MoD by manufacturer AgustaWestland at the Farnborough International Air Show.  The MoD is buying 34 Wildcats for the Army and 28 Maritime Attack variants which will replace the Lynx fleet operated by the Army Air Corps and Fleet Air Arm

The MOD announces that 4 Mech Brigade will replace 12 Mech Brigade in Helmand province later this

UK and Afghan security forces find a significant amount of insurgent explosives and narcotics in Nad 'Ali
The men of A (Norfolk) Company have been working closely with Afghan security forces since their arrival in Helmand in late March and the discovery happened while troops were carrying out an operation to stop insurgents threatening local protected communities

Troops in Helmand Province receive their tins of tea and biscuits in time to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee
A total of 15,000 tins were sent out in January to servicemen and women across the world, so that they would arrive in good time for the Diamond Jubilee celebrations

Captain Heather Stanning has won gold at the Rowing World Cup in Lucerne. She and rowing partner Helen Glover continued their march towards Olympic qualification with a second World Cup Rowing series gold medal in the coxless pairs (which followed on from their win in Belgrade earlier in the month)

A new type of Check Point is unveiled in Helmand Province
CP Samander has been specially designed and built from local materials, using local methods of construction, to enable easy repair

Are your kids getting involved in Red, White and Blue day?   If they don't know about it yet, hopefully they will soon and then they can start to prepare for the fun and games in October, when they'll be able to help raise loads of money for the Soldiers' Charity (the ABF)

The MOD has revealed that an incinerator to dispose of unserviceable small arms ammunition has been delivered to Afghanistan. It's needed for a stockpile of ammo which has built up during operations

A new animated video raises awareness of the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme
Developed by the MOD in partnership with the Royal British Legion and the mental health charity Combat Stress, the video raises awareness of the financial support available to those injured as a result of their service, in a fun way

A new national Falklands memorial is unveiled at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire
Initiated by the South Atlantic Medal Association 1982, the Falklands memorial has been built to honour the Task Force and remember the 255 UK servicemen and merchant seamen who gave their lives in the Falklands conflict
