Army Radio News - 31 Jan 2013

The MoD has published details of how it will equip the Armed Forces over the next ten years and how it will be funded.
For the first time, the Government has set out a fully-funded Defence Plan totalling almost 160 Billion pounds. The affordability of this plan has been scrutinised by the National Audit Office and their analysis has also been published.

Nottingham has shown the strength of its support for Service personnel and their families with the signing of a Community Covenant.
Through a joint signing, both Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire County Councils have pledged practical help for thir military communities. Nottinghamshire is currently home to around 2,000 Service personnel and their families.

It's been announced Britain is offering military personnel to West Africa.
The Defence Secretary Philip Hammond announced to Parliament that soldiers are set to deploy to support French forces fighting Islamist Militants in Mali.

The Duchess of Cornwall, Colonel-in-Chief of 4th Battalion The Rifles has visited troops training at their base on Salisbury Plain.
The Duchess was chauffeured around the camp in a Husky protected support vehicle. During the visit she watched as soldiers took part in Mission-Specific exercises. Later the Duchess opened the Officer's mess and chatted to families at the Hub in Ward Barracks.

Help for Heroes have launched their 2013 Collosal Cake Sale.
Tv personality Lorraine Kelly and Chef James Tanner, both Ambassador's for the event, were at Tedworth House in Tidworth for the launch. Last year the event raised over one hundred and fifty thousand pounds with over 700 hundred registered activities taking place

British-trained Afghan Forces have demonstrated their capabilities by succesfully leading a complex construction operation in Helmand.
With guidance from British Forces led by 1st Battalion the Duke of Lancaster's Regiment (1 Lancs) they have just built a bridge over the Nahr-e-Saraj canal in Helmand Province.

The route has been released for Help For Heroes first competitive cycle race.
The 100 mile sportive, nicknamed the "Dawn Raid" will start from Tedworth House in Tidworth in the early hours of June 2nd.It will travel through Wiltshire, Hampshire and Surrey retracing the tracks of the 2012 Olympic Road Race Heroes.

Soldiers from The Queen's Royal Lancers head towards the halfway point of their deployment in Afghanistan.
Troops from the regiment have been involved in a variety of roles including the training and mentoring of the Afghan Police.

The Royal British Legion in Scotland are looking to freshen-up their image north of the border.
The charity want people to appreciate what they stand for and what they have to offer. They also want people to realise that they're not just here for older veterans.

Soldiers from The Royal Dragoon Guards are training the Afghan Police to control their own checkpoints.
They form part of the District Training Team which also involves training the Afghan trainers to become their own instructors.

3 UK tourists have appeared in court in Cyprus over the death of a British Soldier.
The men  face manslaughter charges following the fatal stabbing of 19 year old David Lee Collins from 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers last November. He died after an incident at a nightclub in Ayia Napa.

SSAFA Forces Help have announced their summer activity breaks.
The children of Service personnel are once again being offered the opportunity to make new friends and try adventure activities on the week long schemes.

Afghanistan is likely to be "messy" after western troops pull out of the country in 2014 according to Defence Secretary Philip Hammond.
Appearing at the Defence Select Committee, Mr Hammond added that there was little prospect of the Kabul-based government defeating the Talibam "outright"

The Army Football Association have announced plans for a big match as they celebrate their big birthday later this year.
The Association will be marking 125 years since they were founded in 1888 with match between an Army select eleven and a team of England all-stars.

The Withdrawal of 3,800 UK troops from Afghanistan is unlikely to happen until the end of this year.
General Nick Carter, Deputy ISAF Commander and the most senior British officer in Helmand says it's most likely that the soldiers will be home during the final quarter of 2013

The Assistant Chief of General Staff has been speaking following the announcement of the third tranche redundancies yesterday.
Major General James Everard says redundancy is never easy and regrets the sense uncertainty but aims to make the process as smooth as possible.

The third tranche of Armed Forces redundancies have been announced.
The Army has today said which employment fields will be affected by the cuts, the job losses are not new and are the third tranche of the Armed Forces Redundancy Programme that was announced in the Strategic Defence and Security Review in October 2010.

Prince Harry has left Afghanistan after a succesful tour as an Apache pilot.
Captain Wales operated as part of the Joint Aviation Group which provides helicopter support to the International Security Assistance Force.

Soldiers from 1 Scots in Afghanistan are getting ready to celebrate a big occasion in their calendar.
New RSM of 1st Battalion the Royal Regiment of Scotland, WO1 Alan Falconer has been telling Garrison FM about the preparations ahead of this Friday's Burn's Night celebrations that they've arranged for troops in Helmand Province.

Paratroopers have been battling heavy snow and freezing conditions on Exercise Eagles Nest.
Soldiers from 2nd Battalion The Parachute Regiment have been on 2 weeks of training at Otterburn Ranges in Northumbria preparing for their role as the British Army's rapid reaction force.

The Race2Recovery team of severely injured soldiers and volunteers have become the first ever disability team to complete the Dakar Rally, The world's toughest race.
The team, made up of mainly British servicemen along with two US Marines-many of them amputees following injuries sustained in Afghanistan-set out with four vehicles on January 4th. The remaining vehicle, manned by Major Matt O' Hare and Corporal Phillip Gillespie crossed the finish line on Saturday evening January 19th.

The British soldier who died in Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham on Wednesday January 16 2013 has been named.
Kingsman David Robert Shaw from 1st Battalion The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment sustained a gunshot wound when his checkpoint came under attack from insurgents in the Laskar Gah District of Helmand Province on January 14th 2013.

The UK has signed a new treaty with Australia to formalise defence co-operation.
The two countries will strengthen their long standing relationship with a new defence treaty to provide a new framework for the many strands where they work closely together. The areas to be covered include defence reform, personnel exchange, equipment, and science and technology

Scotland's war memorials will be cleaned and restored in readiness for the anniversary of the First World War.
A new fund has been made available to communities across the country. The additional 1 million pounds for the Centenary Memorials Restoration Fund has been announced by Scotland's First Minister Alex Sammond.

An MP whose constituency includes one of the UK's Garrisons has voiced his concerns over the cut to MOD Police.
Sir Bob Russell said at defence questions in Parliament this week that Colchester garrison and in time garrisons in general would be seriously affected by the demise of the service.

There's been another accident during the Dakar Rally for the Race2Recovery Team who are raising funds for Help For Heroes.
A third Wildcat vehicle has had to retire from the competition as a result of an in-race accident. The driver and co-driver sustained injuries but both have now recovered and have been discharged from Hospital.

Two UK Defence ministers have been visiting British Service personnel on operations.
Minister of State for the Armed Forces, Andrew Robathan, and Minister for Defence Equipment,Support and Technology, Philip Dunne, visited soldiers in Afghanistan and the Middle East to witness first-hand the progress being made in mentoring Afghan forces.

Tributes have been paid to the British Soldier killed in Afghanistan.
The family of Sapper Richard Walker-a member of 28 Engineer Regiment have described him as a "proud, patriotic man". Defence Secretary Philip Hammond has also been speaking about the 23-year-old's death and says a full investigation into the circumstances will be carried out.

Two organisations are teaming up to help blind and partially sighted veterans.
Remploy and Blind Veterans UK are forming the partnership with the aim to increase employment support and to tap into one and others specific areas of expertise.

A soldier from 28 Engineer Regiment, attached to 21 Engineer Regiment, has been killed in a 'green on blue' incident in Afghanistan.
An ANA soldier opened fire at ANA soldiers and British troops. The gunman was killed in the exchange of fire at PB Hazrat, in Nahr-e-Saraj district.

A former soldier has set out on a mammoth fundraiser on a mobility scooter with just his cats for company.
Mark Newton will take a year to cover most of the UK in his quest to raise funds for a number of charities.

The Prime Minister has promised that Britain will defend the Falkland Islands with military force if Argentina launched another invasion.
Speaking on the BBC David Cameron said "of course we would and we have strong defences in place on the Islands, that is absolutely key, we have fast jets and troops stationed there."

The Race 2 Recovery is underway with a team of injured soldiers aiming to complete the grueling Dakar Rally raising funds for forces charities.
The Challenge left Peru at the weekend and will finish in Chile on January 20th.
