The possibility he was killed by friendly fire is being investigated in Afghanistan, but no conclusions can be reached until the coroner's inquest.

Corporal Simon Hornby from 2nd Battalion The Duke of Lancaster Regiment died following an explosion whilst on foot patrol in the Nad-e-Ali district of Helmand Province on Saturday.

A Royal Military Policeman was killed as a result of small arms fire in the Sanguin area of central Helmand on Sunday. The family of both soldiers have been informed.

Rifleman Samuel John Bassett from 4th Battalion The Rifles died in hospital on Remembrance Sunday after an IED exploded in the Sanguin area of Helmand.

The MOD Has Confirmed Two Soldiers Were Killed In Afghanistan At The Weekend


The first a soldier from 2nd Battalion The Rifles serving with 4th Battalion, died on Saturday afternoon. The second soldier from 4th Battalion The Rifles died on Remembrance Sunday.

Both soldiers died as a result of injuries caused by explosions near Sanguin in Helmand Province.

They all died from gunshot wounds in the Nad-e-Ali district of Helmand Province on Tuesday afternoon. Three served with the Grenadier Guards, and two with the Royal Military Police. All of the soldiers families have been informed.

UK's first Army Recovery Centre opens

The first "Army Recovery Centre" has just been officially opened at the Scottish service charity Erskine's Home in Edinburgh. The Recovery Centre is a dedicated 12-bed wing of the 8.6million pound Erskine Home and is the result of a partnership between the Army, veterans' charity Erskine, and Help for Heroes which together are providing accommodation and support for soldiers wounded or injured on duty

British Army Team Dives In The Desert

The British Army has revealed that it has used a team of Army scuba divers in Afghanistan, to deny weapons and communications equipment to the enemy. A crack team of around 18 specialist Army divers from 3-8 Engineer Regiment are deployed with the Joint Force Engineers and in their most recent task, five divers were used to recover weapons and sensitive equipment after a Viking vehicle that came under contact from Taliban fighters and rolled into one of the many irrigation canals in the Babaji area

They died following an explosion while on patrol near Sangin in Helmand province. Next of kin have been informed who have asked for a 24 hour period of grace before further details are released

Captain Mark Hale and Rifleman Daniel Wild of 2 Rifles and Lance Bombardier Matthew Hatton of 40 Regiment Royal Artillery died in an explosion on Thursday. Sergeant Simon Valentine of 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers was killed by an explosion on Saturday and Private Richard Hunt from 2nd Battalion The Royal Welsh died of wounds on Saturday at Selly Oak in Birmingham, having been wounded by an explosion near Musa Qaleh on Thursday

It's been announced that a service of remembrance to mark the end of combat operations in Iraq, is to be held at St Paul's Cathedral in London, on Friday the 9th of October 2009.
The service will be attended by Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh and it will be an opportunity to honour the members of the UK forces and civil servants who served in Iraq and to remember those who gave their lives over the the course of the six-year operation

A British Army Night Assault In Afghanistan Seizes Drugs and Bomb Making Equipment

Hundreds of troops have swooped into a network of narcotics labs in the Sangin valley, in Afghanistan's Helmand province, as part of a massive air assault which saw them seize a huge haul of opium and kill a number of insurgents

The MOD has responded to articles in various national newspapers claiming that, due to budget cuts, training for Territorial Army soldiers is to dramatically decrease - The MOD says the TA has gone onto 'Campaign Footing', which means that all resources, financial and other, must be directed to activities that support the current operation. Consequently, some TA activities have been reduced or suspended for this year only

He died following an explosion just east of Gereshk in Helmand Province, while he was securing the site of an earlier attack, which had killed 3 members of the Afghan National Army

The MOD Has Confirmed The Deaths Of Three Soldiers From The Parachute Regiment In Afghanistan.

They were killed on Thursday afternoon in an explosion which happened whilst they were travelling in a Jackal vehicle which was taking part in a routine security patrol alongside Afghan National Security Forces to the north of Lashkar Gah.

It's believed the three soldiers were killed in the initial blast, a fourth member of the patrol remains in a critical condition.

The families of the soldiers have been informed.

NI Army Dog Unit Memorial

A special memorial has been unveiled to commemorate the contribution to peace in Northern Ireland and the losses suffered by the Army Dog Unit that was based in the region. The Red Paw Memorial near the Armed Forces Memorial in Staffordshire has just been unveiled and is named after the badge worn by members of the Northern Ireland Army Dog Unit who lost six handlers and two dogs between 1973 when the unit was formed and 2007 when it was disbanded
