Armed Forces personnel are recognised at the fifth annual Sun Military Awards (The Miliies).
Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall were guests of honour at the event billed as "A Night of Heroes".
Former soldiers are to be drafted into schools to pass on military-style values.
The plan is part of a 1.9 million pound government initiative aimed at passing on skills like teamwork and leadership to expelled pupils.
Sir Alex Ferguson has presented soldiers with their Afghanistan medals.
The Manchester United Manager handed out the honours at Chester Racecourse to members of 1st Battalion The Royal Welsh after they had marched through the city centre.
